Malcolm mac Duncan: flinging the black mage's corpse aside Mal saw Kandros bent over Sagris' body, pouring a potion down his throat. "Planet preserve, be he alive?"
Kandros: "Against all odds, yes."said Kandros, hopeful for poor healer's life
Kandros: *glad for the poor healer's life having been saved
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal let out a sigh of relief, then glanced at the black mage's half-melted corpse. He forced himself to look away from it. "I wonder where tha cache be hidden," he mused
CosmicHorror: Looking around the room, the group could see several weapon racks carved from the stone walls, but they were all bare. Another black box sat in the southwest corner of the room, but this one was diferent from the others, being longer and lacking any indention in the top of it.
Kandros: Leaving the unconscious man alone, Kandros pointed at the box "Look at that!"he said for the Kartinian as he started walking for it
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal looked at it for a moment. "One'a them damn things again!" he said. He walked over to Sagris and began to rummage through the fallen healer's items to find the stone they had pulled from the boar earlier
Kandros: However, after a couple of steps he turned back to glance again at the helpless healer and returned back, taking an healing potion from his pockets and pouring it down his lips "That's my last one, let's hope it gets you up."he muttered
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Beat me ta it," said Mal, handing Kandros a potion
** Sagris slowly opens his eyes and lets out a pained sigh, "You just couldn't let an old man get some rest could you?" Sagris smiles faintly and chuckles lightly, before coughing violently. **
Kandros: "Well, I guess you have another two or three years in you. "chuckled back the Elohim "That was close, though. The bastard could have killed us all."he added more seriously looking to the ruined corpse of the defeated cultist.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Good ta see ya back on yer feet. We be hurt bad, tha bastard nearly killed me, ye, and Luchin."
Sagris: "Nearly dead is a whole lot more dead than I planed on being when I got up today." Sagris slowly pushes himself up onto his feet, using a nearby wall to steady himself. Pausing to wipe blood from the corner of his mouth and wincing from the still fresh burns, he begins channeling healing energies into the party.
Kandros: While Sagris healed his companions Kandros, who had not been wounded in the confrontation, turned his attention back to the black box
Luchin (enter): 15:10
CosmicHorror: Kandros found that the box was much like the others they had found. Seemingly rooted the the spot, and lacking any distinctive features.
Attempting to assign the role of PLAYER to (60) Luchin...
CosmicHorror: Booting '(52) Luchin' from room...
Luchin (exit): 15:10
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal was subsantially healed by Sagris, though some of his injuries remained. "Thanks," he said, and wandered over to the box holding out the stone to Kandros.
Kandros: Unhappy at not having found anything noteworthy about the container, Kandros tapped it's surface lightly with his hand, waiting for the Kartinian to bring him the stone.
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal handed the stone to Kandros. "All yers, twinkl'ees."
Kandros: Taking the sphere in his hand, Kandros looked again at the box "Doesn't look like there's any place where we could stick this though..."he muttered "Perhaps we might try some...more brutal tactics? What do you say?"he asked the human turning to him
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Try'a smash it, ye mean? Tha' dinnae work wit' tha last wan, I dinnae see why it should now."
Luchin: Luchin looked around nervously, wiping his sweaty hands against his clothes. "Perhaps we should get back to town, masters, and investigate such things in a safer place."
** Sagris begins slowly walking around the room, examining the walls for any signs of markings in an attempt to distract himself from the nearby lava. **
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Gotta find tha cache first," Mal said to Luchin
Kandros: "Indeed."said the Elohim, clueless as to how to open the puzzling container. Looking at the stone for a few moments, and then at the box, he idly tried rubbing the former on the latter, but didn't look too convinced that it would do anything.
CosmicHorror: Nothing happened when Kandros touched the rock to the box.
Sagris: "I'm thinking that all thats left of the cache here is what that priest had. He'd more than likely shipped it off to other cultists for use or gold.
Kandros: "Say...did you find anything that might be related to this box among the belongings of that bastard who tried to kill us?"asked Kandros
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal swore and scratched his head. "Here," he held out the smaller stone criss-crossed with lines he had taken from the priest.
Kandros: "This looks interesting, too."said the Elhoim as he took the smaller sphere in his hand and examined it.
CosmicHorror: The stone was much smaller than the one they found in the boar. It looked much like a round stone with white lines on it.
Kandros: With a weird look on his face, the Elohim tried to rub this stone on the black box, hoping for something noteworthy to happen
CosmicHorror: Again, nothing happened.
Kandros: "Fuck!"swore said the Elohim seeing that his latest attempts hadn't worked "This is useless. Umh...perhaps there's a last thing we can try..."he muttered
Kandros: Taking both stones, one in each hand, the Elohim bought them closer and rubbed them.
CosmicHorror: Nothing happened when Kandros rubbed the stones together.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "A'right, I'll try tha direct approach," said Mal, beginning to pound away on the box. "Help," he asked the others, straining his muscles
Kandros: Kandros too pulled back his sleeves and set his feeble body to the task of opening the container with brute-force methods.
CosmicHorror: As everyone prepared to break the box, it opened. The top of the box split in the middle and the two sides flipped up, then dropped down next to the sides, which then folded out and slid under the box. Where the box once stood was a black stone gauntlet.
whispering to Kandros, Kandros realized that the box opened when both he and Sagris touched the box.
Sagris: [1d12] => [1] = (1)
whispering to Trinomial, Sagris noticed that the box opened when both he and Kandros touched the box.
** Sagris clears his throat, "Well, that was easier than expected." **
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal looked at it in surprise. "Tha was...interestin'."
** Sagris gives Kandros an odd look and scratches his chin, "Agreed. What, do you imagine, have we got in common?" **
Kandros: Kandros almost screamed "It opened! It opened!"he said leaping from the joy.
Kandros: Then, smiling at the old healer, he scratched his chin and replied "The most obvious thing would be our arcane powers, I guess. "
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Easy thar, twinkl'ees," Mal chuckled, indicating the lava.
** Sagris nods slowly, "Perhaps, but my guts says its deeper than that." **
Kandros: "So..."said the Elohi, now more lucid "Who's taking the gauntlet? it might be risky, you know..."
Kandros: *edit: the Elohim
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal shrugged. "I'll dae it, I dinnae fear nae gauntlet."
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal bent down and picked up the gauntlet
CosmicHorror: Mal found it impossible to move the gauntlet from its current position.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Bugger it, it dinnae wanna move," he said
Sagris: "Hmm, shall we give it a try, Kandros? Perhaps it behaves the same as the box."
Kandros: "I was about to suggest that. "nodded the Elohim bringing his hand to touch the gauntlet
Sagris: .me places his hands on the gauntlet as well and gently tries to move it.
CosmicHorror: Sagris and Kandros were able to move the gauntlet.
Sagris: "I suppose it just likes us more, hey? So which of us is going to be carrying this lovely thing?"
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Well doon twinkl'ees! An' Sagris."
Kandros: "I wouldn't know. We don't know what this thing does..."he replied "And, more important, if it lovely or not. It could be cursed, for all we know!"
Kandros: edit: if it's really lovely or not.
Sagris: "You're right. On the other hand, you don't live to be my age by making smart decisions." Sagris slips his left hand into the gauntlet.
Sagris: EDIT: *right hand.
whispering to Trinomial, The gauntlet seemed too large for the healer's hand at first, but shortly after putting his hand in it, it seemed to conform to Sagris' hand. Sagris notices five, one inch round sockets in the underside of the gauntlet.
** Sagris flexes his fingers and examines the glove, "Hmm, there seems to be sockets in here... Sockets shaped as the stone we found. Perhaps we should insert it?" **
Kandros: Nodding, Kandros handed him the two stones.
** Sagris drops the stones into the sockets, slightly surprised by the presence of the second stone. "Didn't think there were any boars down here, but oh well." **
CosmicHorror: As Sagris took the stone they took from the boar, the stone began to glow with a faint white light.
Kandros: "The priest had it."informed him Kandros
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal watched as the stone was put in the socket and began to glow. "What manner'a magic be that?" he wondered
CosmicHorror: The, now glowing, stone fit snugly into one of the sockets in the gauntlet.
Malcolm mac Duncan: edit: as the stone began to glow
** Sagris hands the stripped stone back to Kandros. "Well, now it glows." Sagris points one of his gloved fingers at the nearest wall to see if it activated the gauntlet. **
Kandros: "This is fascinating."said a puzzled Kandros taking back the stone "Be careful with that thing, though. You wouldn't want to disintegrate us or something!"chuckled the Elohim
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal looked at Kandros in alarm
whispering to Kandros, Kandros notices that the gauntlet and its relationship to the stone stems from Planetary magic, like that commonly seen among the Nibelung.
CosmicHorror: Nothing happened when Sagris pointed at the wall.
Sagris: "Well, no fireballs or deatgh rays. Makes a fancy torch, though."
Sagris: EDIT: or not.
Kandros: Glancing with great interest at what he healer was doing, Kandros seemed to have understood something about it "I think it's magic is related to the power of the planet. Possibly it was made by Nibelungs or someone with an equally important connection to it."
Kandros: *glancing = gazing
Malcolm mac Duncan: "To tha power'a tha planet?"
Kandros: "Aye. Never heard about it?"asked the Elohim "The planets possess great magical energies, which flow in them..."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "I ken," Mal said, raising his eyebrow. "Planet preserve us, ye ain't very observant, twinkl'ees. I was wonderin' what manner'a power tha gauntlet has ex'ctly."
Kandros: "I think we're all wondering about it too. It doesn't seem to do anything. Sagris...will you try touching something with the gauntlet while concentrating on it? Perhaps that will do something..."he suggested
Sagris: "Well, it dosn't shott death at people and it makes things stop glowing, beyond that we'll have to find someone a bit more knowledgable about these things I imagine." Shrugging, Sagris takes Kandros' suggestion and pokes him gently.
CosmicHorror: Nothing happened when Sagris poked Kandros.
Sagris: "Nothing I can tell. We should study it further after we return to Clearwater. That lava-priest may be gone but those minions of his may still be lurking around."
Kandros: Still, had Kandros recoiled in shock as the healer poked him, as if expecting something great to happen. "You shouldn't have done that."said the Elohim embarassed after he realized this was not the case, however
Malcolm mac Duncan: "We should go ta the other boxes, might be thar's things in 'em that'll shed some light."
Kandros: "Might be. Still...I agree we have other things to do as of now."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "As thar dinnae seem ta be'a cache'a bloodsteel weapons. Pity, I were hopin' thar'd be a claymore."
Kandros: "Unless the cache was limited to that single bloodsteel mace...perhaps the minions have taken the other weapons?"suggested Kandros
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Seems tha way, but we might as well have'a look 'round." Mal began to examine the walls
Sagris: "So which of us is going to carry the gauntlet. We still have no clear idea of what its for." Sagris uses his other hand to remove the gauntlet but quickly realises the item won't budge. "It seems I've volunteered. This is most definatly not reassuring."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Tha'...dinnae be good," Mal said as he saw that Sagris couldn't remove the gauntlet
Luchin: "If it becomes necessary, there's always cutting off the hand," suggested Luchin casually.
CosmicHorror: Despite an exhaustive search, the group could not find any secret compartment or any other trace of the weapons cache.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Yer a right cheery lot up from yer planet," Mal said to Luchin
Kandros: "Aye. "said Kandros, chuckling at the Bogun's suggestion "Just a quick slash with Mal's sword and you'll be fine. "
Sagris: "I've survived worse than gauntlets in my time, there'll be no cutting or I'll let Sasha have at you."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Be it somethin' in tha water?"
Luchin: Luchin raised his eyebrows at Kandros' chuckle, showing he wasn't thinking of it as a joke at all.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Well thar dinnae be anythin' here. Shall we search up thar, where we killed tha doggie, an' then head on back?"
Malcolm mac Duncan: head = heid
Sagris: "That seems best. I must admit I'm much more eager to get this looked at, now."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "I ken, but we might'a well finish tha job first." Mal began to climb back up to the room above
Malcolm mac Duncan: once he was back up, Mal dropped his rope down for the others
** Sagris heads up the robe after Mal but quickly slips and lands roughly on his feet. "The, ah... The gauntlets got bad grip." Sagris mutters, wincing. **
Kandros: Seing Sagris fumble with the rope, Kandros decided to be careful and climb up slowly and careful. He did so and had no problems
Malcolm mac Duncan: once everyone was back up, Mal gathered up his rope and began to search the room
CosmicHorror: Again, the group found nothing of interest in the room, aside from the potrusions from the walls.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "A'right, tha cache be gone or real well hid. Let's git back ta Clearwater an' report."
Sagris: "The sooner the better"
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal nodded. "Less anywan else has ideas. Luchin?"
Malcolm mac Duncan: as Luchin said nothing, Mal headed for the door
CosmicHorror: The sun was getting low in the sky as the group left the shack.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Let's git movin'," said Mal. "Dinnae wanna git caught out in tha dark if we can help it."!
Sagris: Definatly not," Sagris says as he mounts Sasha. "Lets be off, then."
CosmicHorror: The trip back to Clearwater was uneventful and after an hour they were walking along the East Road back into Clearwater. The guard post ahead had lights on inside, and there were six guards patroling the pass. The black box was right were they left it, but was being ignored by the guards.
** Sagris nods to the guards, "Evening, sirs." Acting on impulse, Sagris leans down from Sasha to touch the box with his bare hand, leaving his gauntleted hand concealed within his robe. **
Kandros: Kandros nodded, joining the healer and laying his bare hand on the stone.
CosmicHorror: One guard came over to the group. "Evening. I assume you're on business with the Governor?" The guard ignored the two touching the box, which did not react.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Aye," Mal replied.
CosmicHorror: The guard nodded. "You can go on through."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Let's git gaun to the Gov'rnor's," said Mal
Kandros: "Umh."shook his head Kandros "Not as easy as we thought, eh?"he told Sagris
Sagris: "Each must be different, or perhaps it takes us both."
Sagris: "Either way, let us return to the Governor."
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal continued on towards the Governor's Manor
Kandros: Kandros obviously followed behind them.
CosmicHorror: The group arrived at the Governor's Manor just before the sun dipped into the sea. There was light coming from the Manor's windows.
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal headed in, glancing about for the gardener as he did
CosmicHorror: The gardener was nowhere to be seen.
** Sagris followed Mal's lead into the building **
CosmicHorror: It was very quiet inside the Manor and the lamps were burning low, causing the large hall to be filled with shadows.
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal wandered upstairs, looking around.
** Sagris waited at the entrance of the Manor, not willing to intrude more than he already had. **
CosmicHorror: Talera's desk was unmanned, though the door next to it was open a crack, letting light from inside spill into the hallway.
Kandros: Having closely followed beinhd Mal, Kandros glanced at the empty desk "Seems she's not there...umh..."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Err...howzitgaun?" Mal called out tentatively
Kandros: "Perhaps you might try to go there and listen, so you know if they are saying anything interesting..."suggested tentatively Kandros
CosmicHorror: There was no response from the other room.
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal scratched his head. "This dinnae be good," he said.
Kandros: "Well, she might just be busy, after all."said Kandros "Why would you worry so much?"
Malcolm mac Duncan: "I sup'pose," Mal shrugged. "Yet thar dinnae be anywan aboot, an' tha door be left jes a bit open fer some reason." Mal decided to trust his instincts and began to walk quietly towards the door.
whispering to Malcolm mac Duncan, The other room was empty, save for the table with the map on it, and a lamp that sat on top of the map, as well as a few miniature boats. Another door sat on the other side of the room, this one closed, though light could be seen coming from underneith it.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Thar's no wan thar, but thar's light comin' from another door," Mal reported quietly before moving into the room and the closed door.
CosmicHorror: There was voices coming from the other side of the door, but were too faint to make out.
whispering to Malcolm mac Duncan, Mal was unable to make out the voices.
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal moved back to the others. "Thar's folks ahind tha door, but I cannae work out who they be."
Edward (exit): 18:33
** Sagris finds the group, sensing that the Governor isn't going to appear and invite him in. **
Kandros: "I guess we'll have to wait then."said Kandros to Mal
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal shrugged and waited at the door which was slightly ajar, watching the other door inside
CosmicHorror: After several minutes the door opened and Malia stepped out, seeming to be suprised by the others presence. "Oh, you're back. What did you find there?" She said, first suprised, then becoming eager to hear.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Ah, well, first, we found Luchin here," Mal indicated the Bogun
CosmicHorror: "Oh yes?" Malia looked at Luchin. "A Bogun right? Havn't seen one since the war. You working with this group?"
whispering to Luchin, Luchin could recognize that Malia was a Chosen.
Luchin: Luchin bowed low, narrowing his eyes at Malia and pursing his lips. "Ah, haha, yes, well, for now at least, they're very kind, haha, yes. I'll likely be on my way soon, but, you know, haha..."
CosmicHorror: "Well, if you want to stick around, we'd pay you like the others."
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal began to relate what had happened at the shack, but did not mention the black box they had found or what had happened with Sagris and the gauntlet, deciding to let the healer mention that himself if he wished
Luchin: "Hmmm, hmmm, perhaps, yes, you know, gold is pleasant, but not my only concern of course. We'll see, my lady, we'll see." He seemed quite uncomfortable in her presence.
CosmicHorror: Malia listened to Mal's recount. "Hmmm... Must have already been looted, that's not good. Find anything else?"
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Err...well..." Mal scratched his head. "'Twas quite strange, we found a black box, thar's been a few'a them poppin' up lately."
CosmicHorror: "Yah, we've seen them around. Talera seems to think they're giant artifacts, but even she doesn't really know what to make of them."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Might be. Tha twinkl'ees kens magic better 'an me," said Mal.
Kandros: Kandros nodded "We had heard about these so called 'boxes'. We spent some time trying to open the one we found there. Unfortunately, we didn't get anything good out of our attempts."he explained
** Sagris nods, wishing to remain silent least he betray away his companions story. **
CosmicHorror: "Nothing at all?" Malia said looking at Kandros curiously.
Kandros: "We tought there could have been some sort of key or the like, but the box was completely smooth. Then we tried brute force, but that did not work, either." here Kandros paused for a moment "These boxes are extremely interesting, I wonder how they work and how they got here..."
CosmicHorror: "Anything else about the box?"
Kandros: Kandros scratched his chin, looking puzzled at the woman questions "Well...we happened to see two other boxes, and this one was much larger than the others.Would have been nice if we could have discovered something about them, but unfortunately we haven't, really."
CosmicHorror: "Yes, would have." Malia shook her head. "Look, you can keep whatever you found there. Since there was no weapons, you'll still get paid. But any information about the boxes would be very helpful." She paused for a moment then added, "And profitable."
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal glanced at Sagris
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Thar was a mace act'lly, tha demon worshipp'r had it." Mal fished it out
** Sagris shakes his head, "Who coudln't use the extra gold, hey? But we know nothing. If you could fetch the reward, please? I'm tired and very much need to replenish my energies." **
Kandros: "Aye."nodded Kandros, hearing the healer's words "That was a tough job, much tougher than Maco. We risked death more than once!"
CosmicHorror: "Just one mace hmmm?" Malia looked at it. "You can keep it, as compensation." She said, then added, "You really know nothing about the boxes?"
** Sagris gives her a grave look, "I said no, didn't I? Child, I hope you arn't implying something you shouldn't. I'm just an old man in need of rest, not questions." **
Kandros: "What would we know?"said a somewhat tired Kandros "The first time we saw one was when we went to fetch Maco for you. We haven't been around them a lot. Yes, we have been told about them, but I doubt it's things that you don't know anyway. Basically, these things seem to appear at random all around, and that's all we really know about them."
CosmicHorror: Malia looked at the group for a moment. "Alright." She said finally. "Just wait here." She turned and went back into the room, closing the door behind her.
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal sighed as she left. "I dinnae think it'll dae any harm ta tell her wha' we've learned," he said quietly to Sagris
Sagris: "We already have," Sagris replied.
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal shrugged.
CosmicHorror: Malia returned, carrying several bags. "Here, and there's more if you do find anything out about the boxes and tell us." She said, handing the bags to each of the group.
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Thank ye," said Mal.
Sagris: "Thank you."
Kandros: Kandros nodded "Thanks."he said
CosmicHorror: Malia nodded. "If there's nothing else, I'm going to be closing the Manor for visiting soon."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "A'right." Mal prepared to leave
** Sagris vacates the manor and searchs for a Inn to rest at that can stable Sasha. **
Kandros: As they were leaving, Kandros spoke "That woman's a bity too nosy for my tastes. I think we should be careful to keep what little we know a secret."
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal shrugged. "I dinnae ken why ye be so worried."
Sagris: "Because people talk. I'll find a way to remove the gauntlet, but the entire town dosn't need to know about it. Theres plenty of people curious about these boxes, many I'm guessing arn't too pleasent. If word gets out that we can open them, and they contain maical treasures, what will happen? Some things are best left unsaid."
Kandros: "He's right."said the Elohim to Mal "Wouldn't it be so much better if we could keep what's in this box for ourselves? 'course, that's assuming it's actually good, unlikne that cursed gauntlet which doesn't seem to have much use..."
Malcolm mac Duncan: "I sup'ose. I think tha Gov'rnor's own secr'tary kens how'ta be discreet, but as yer wantin' ta keep quiet..." Mal shrugged.
** Sagris shakes his head. "Look at the size of Clearwater. Cities are where people go to rot away in the most luxurious way they can imagine. I'm not sure I'd trust the Governor himself, lest of all his secretary. If you want to be in on lots of secrets you shouldn't know, thats the job you take." **
Malcolm mac Duncan: "Yer wiser 'an I am, Sagris, an' I'll respect yer wishes. We'll try 'an fix things ourselves."
CosmicHorror: The King's Retreat inn, where Mal and Kandros had stayed before had a stable that would suit Sasha. The owner, though he fretted constantly over it, allowed Sagris, Gale and Luchin to board with Mal and Kandros.
Malcolm mac Duncan: Mal headed to his room and did a half hour of exercises before settling down to sleep
Kandros: Kandros, too tired to do anything else, went straight to bed
** Sagris went to bed and quickly fell asleep, still exhasuted from his injuries. **
Luchin: Luchin curled up in the corner of a room, clutching his sword like an infant.
Malcolm mac Duncan (exit): 20:03
